Building Emotional Muscle

I think I like this Daily Journal idea! Being accountable to you guys for everything I do is making me step up to the challenge. Think about that the next time you keep yourself from telling family and friends about your ambitious goals. Maybe making yourself accountable to them is just what you need to get or keep yourself motivated to follow through on the things you must do to succeed!

I also had to make a small—but important—decision. You see, I left my antioxidants, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and beta carotene at home. Will I just not end up taking them right after my workout and just go back to the hotel and eat? Or, will I go to the grocery store and buy more immediately after training and take them when I should? I could easily "blow off" taking them—and justify that it’s just a little thing, or I have plenty of time until the Universe, or I just came off a big victory not more than four days ago, so it’s no big deal.

In the gym you build physical muscle. The other 23 hours of the day you build—or destroy—"emotional" muscle. Becoming an outstanding bodybuilder is filled with thousands of little emotional tests just like this one. What kind of decisions are you currently making?

I went to the store and bought the anti-oxidants.

Gut-Check Time!

I have had a couple of strange thoughts go through my head this last week. The possibility of me ever cheating on my diet—even with something as miniscule as having an extra bowl of complex carbohydrates—has never been an option for me as long as I have been competing.

I guess I’m only human, though. Last Saturday night, I jokingly talked about going out and eating a stack of pancakes! "I could do that if I wanted, you know," I rationalized. "My body is far ahead of schedule with nine weeks left. They’re not going to hurt me!" I was really only kidding, but to be honest, I thought about it a lot longer than I normally would have.

Yesterday afternoon while I was at the grocery store, I had convinced myself that I was going to have an "unscheduled" bowl of grits. Now, a bowl of grits "only" has 140 calories with 31 grams of carbohydrates—but the extra food was not planned on my diet! As I drove home, I went back and forth trying to decide if I was going to have that bowl of grits. I swear I could Taste it!

Finally, I thought to myself that if I DID eat the grits, I probably wouldn’t do any damage to my contest preparation, but I would surely weaken my "emotional muscle." I would feel terrible. If I was strong and resisted, I would strengthen that muscle.

I did the right thing and didn’t eat the extra bowl of carbs, but it was a "battle" that I'm not accustomed to having with myself as I get ready for a show. If you have found yourself cheating on your diet, I have empathy for you. If it can happen to me at this level, it can happen to anyone. What got me through was clearly associating myself to the BAD feeling I would experience if I did cheat. You may want to try that strategy any time you feel your level of discipline waning.

"This journal is a revolutionary and valuable tool for those considering competing because it gives away valuable contest and diet preparation secrets. It is also a personal Thesaurus and source of inspiration for average people, trying to get an edge and better themselves. It clearly articulates the drive that is necessary to become a champion. It details the importance of planning, focus, dedication and preparation, as being the fundamental keys to improving the human physique—naturally. More importantly, it clarifies and analyses the lessons learned along the road to an upcoming contest. No bodybuilder has ever documented their progress in such detail, while PREPARING for an upcoming contest. It is a journal that I thoroughly recommend to anyone interested in the making of a champion, or trying to BECOME a champion."

Three Days Left!

"I’ve got three days to go to my show. I’ve been using your training journal to help me get into the best shape ever. My glutes are ripped!! I must say that at the start of the carb/potassium loading phase, I was a bit worried about starting to early. But, like you said in the journal you must have faith in the system! Thanks again for all you help and allowing me to reach such great condition!"

Two Days Left!

Man, I can’t believe today how I look…(in your own words) SCARY! Skip, you are right—your guidance is unbelievable! I owe you so much respect. I will make it my mission to meet up with you and thank you personally…I PROMISE! Man, my glutes are ripped to the bone; my thighs ripped so deep I could place coins between the cuts; my triceps are SCARY! All I can say is that I am in such a positive mood. I’ve never been this confident and I’ve still have two days to go! Thanks again! You are the TRUE and ONLY NATURAL GURU!"

The Day After The Show

"Skip, I could not believe by Saturday how my physique had changed day-to-day from when I spoke to you three days before the show. To be honest with you, I looked totally AWESOME. This may sound arrogant, but I will send you the photos and even try to get you sent a video of the show so you can see for yourself."

"Skip, when I competed at the Nationals and came runner up in the Heavy weight class I weighed 180lbs at the ANB World Champs I weighed 191lbs and was in better condition. My muscle were so full I thought they were going to explode, whilst I was back stage getting ready for the pre-judging. I was even contemplating not even pumping up as I was so full! I owe this success to your training journal and guidance. I would of not been able to have got into that condition without your help. I will send you my comparative photos from the British Champs and the World Champs so you can see the difference. It shocked me!! I was finally able to compete with full/ripped muscle. This condition left me and my fellow British teammates amazed! Thanks again for all you help and support. "
