Contest Dieting Strategies

When I started dieting on March 1, 2000 (23 1/2 weeks before the contest, I wasn't in great shape--but I certainly wasn't fat either. I would say I weighed about 252 pounds. I weighed in at 221 pounds for the NPC Team Universe.

As a point of reference, here was my dieting strategy for the 2000 NPC Team Universe:

March 1, 2000 (23 ½ weeks out) - Started "dieting" for the 2000 NPC Team Universe scheduled for August 12, 2000.

1.   By "dieting" I mean I did not eat any "junk" "cheat," or non-bodybuilding diet foods from this day until after the contest.

2.   I was not necessarily calories conscious. If I felt hungry, I ate more vegetables. The calories would vary depending on how many vegetables I ate. I didn't start weighing my chicken until May 21, 2000 (12 weeks out from the show).

3.  I concentrated on eating all eight of my meals every single day and eating those meals on time.

4.   I started making sure I liberally salting all eight of my meals.

5.   The distinctions of this diet were:

·      I added one tablespoon of canola oil to all eight of my meals.

·      I ate no starchy carbohydrates whatsoever until July 1, 2000 (6 weeks out from the show). All carbohydrates came from vegetables and Ny-Tro PRO-40.

These were the basic foods and the basic diet I started with. All adjustments were made from this core diet:

Meal #1 - 7AM

12 egg whites, 1 scoop of VP2 Whey Protein Isolate; about 5 servings of mixed vegetables, 1 tablespoon of canola oil.

Meal #2 - 9AM

Ny-Tro PRO-40, about 5 servings of mixed vegetables, 1 tablespoon of canola oil.

Meal #3 - 11AM

4 ounces of chicken breast, 1 scoop of VP2 Whey Protein Isolate; about 5 servings of mixed vegetables, 1 tablespoon of canola oil.

Meal #4 - 1PM

Ny-Tro PRO-40, about 5 servings of mixed vegetables, 1 tablespoon of canola oil.

Meal #5 - 3PM

4 ounces of chicken breast, 1 scoop of VP2 Whey Protein Isolate; about 5 servings of mixed vegetables, 1 tablespoon of canola oil.

Meal #6 - 5PM

Ny-Tro PRO-40, about 5 servings of mixed vegetables, 1 tablespoon of canola oil.

Meal #7 - 7PM

4 ounces of chicken breast, 1 scoop of VP2 Whey Protein Isolate; about 5 servings of mixed vegetables, 1 tablespoon of canola oil.
